What Susan Bordo's quote(#2) means is that a man has his pride, his manhood so high and strong, products just have to be renamed to differentiate those of women. I disagree with the quote because man and women products generally the same just different names and labels. My advertisment shows a man jogging wearing sneakers that look unisex. This being a man and woman can both wear it. A man could purchase grooming products but if really looked down deep its all realatively the same just buying that of a woman.
This is an effective interpretation; I agree that products for men are renamed to reflect traditional notions of masculinity, which you also mentioned. Your ad as example is quite apt; sneakers are unisex. Yet when we go to athletic shoe shops, male and female sneakers are usually on the opposite walls. I wonder what the sales person would say if a man asked to try on a women's sneaker?
Yes as I mention sneakers are unisex and in the store I'd think it be weird and people will apose to it because of the simple minded society we live in. Sneakers just go on feet nothing more to it really. For example Converse are both worn male and female and there is no problem with that.
